Whinlatter forest - Downhill track

13.11.11

The day after the 5 passes challenge. We went to investigate a track Roger had rode previously, and proposed for one stage of the ATBA-UK 2012 British downhill competition.

The track is in Whinlatter forest, which is the only alpine forest in England. The 1.8 mile track consists of three stages.

The first stage consists of a long straight with a couple of mellow bends. This lets you gently accelerate. Then into a tight left handed switchback which marks the start of the second part.

The second part marks a steeper section of track. Once again another tight turn brings you out of the enclosure of the forest, to an exposed service track. This cuts away steeply to the left, and the views are magnificent.

Onto the third and final section of the run. The start of this part is the steepest on the course. Although the steepness is short lived.

This leads into a nice woodland trail. One last tight corner, then onto the finish.

We all rode the track on a brake board, but the track should be perfectly ridable without one.
