watering holes
The Kent countryside is well endowed with good pubs, many of them free houses. Some of the better ones are detailed below. Enjoy for either a sports beer or post ride refreshments. All venues listed are either next to the trails or on a major route.
Maidstone
The Robin Hood 700 year old, grade 2 listed inn. Serves home cooked food and good selection of beer. Situated close to the pilgrims way.
The Bull Inn @ Penenden Heath. Has a chain pub feel. Serves cheap standard food with a reasonable selection of beers. However a great place to spend a sunny afternoon with a drink on the heath.
Other notable spots are Cornfords chip shop over the road from the bull.
Crundale
Compasses Inn This 15th century inn is now owned by Shepherd Neame. Serves top quality home cooked food. The Compasses really is the quintessential Kentish country pub.
Sandgate
The Fountain, Has aBBQ area which can be used in the summer.
Bar Vasa Nice seafront bar. Not much of a looker, but friendly staff and cold beer. Situated very close to Sandy lanes.
Also worth noting there is a Tesco at Cheriton , which has a standard good cheap all day breakfast.
Wye
Tickled Trout - 17th century inn set next to the river Stour. Has a set aside dining area serving great quality traditional English dishes. A wide selection of ale's and beers available.
Chartham
The Local previously known as the Fag Arms. Has recently been refurbished. Whilst the menu has recently been scaled down hot bar food is still available. Has a large beer garden with bbq area available.
Perry Woods
Rose and Crown Voted Kent Messenger country pub of the year 1998. This thriving 16th century pub has great food, and a good selection of ale's and beers. The place can get busy on a summer weekend but has a large beer garden. So there is always plenty of seating available.
Barham
The Black Robin free house near Covert Wood at Kingston. Has a convenience shop attached to the side.
Also the Palm Tree inn near Barham and close to woodland farm campsite is worth noting.
Tunbridge Wells - Porc
A good cafe in Tunbridge Wells, a bit of a rarity - Situated slap bang in the middle of the Calverley park.
High Rocks Inn - A bit out of the way , but a great pub situated adjacent to the famous rocks, popular with climbers. Quite pricey. Unfriendly staff. Bar should be entered by the garden entrance.
