5 passes challenge

12.11.11

Not actually a KentATB trip but an idea started by Roger over at Surfing Dirt. So I met up with Roger in Oxford. Jumped in his car, and headed north. Picking Brennig up In Birmingham, who had traveled across from Wales. We then stayed at Travis's place in Macclesfield overnight. Next day onto the Lakes. Where we met up with Chris from Preston, and Alan & Dave who came down from Scotland.

The challenge was to ride the five highest mountain passes in England. Working up in ascending order. These are (Terms in meters describe altitude).

1, Whinlatter Pass 318 meters - A nice warm up

2, Honister Pass 356 meters - 20%- 30% gradient Lots of traffic

3, Wrynose Pass 393 meters - Very narrow, tight passing cars

4, Hardknott Pass 393 meters - Super steep, 30% gradient, tight switchbacks

5, Kirkstone Pass 454 meters - Long, finishing in Ambleside town centre

We completed the challenge in 8 1/2 hours. Which now represents the benchmark time.

Warning

If you are going to take up the challenge. You will need a good brake. No matter how good a rider you are. Single track downhill roads & oncoming traffic do not mix well. Now that ABS has ceased trading your current options are a noSno or the new Trampa brake board.

It is also worth noting that two cars will be needed. One to leave at the top / bottom, to shuttle riders.

THE 5 PASSES

Whinlatter provided a nice warm up for us. nothing too steep and the corners were pretty laid back. Apart from Brennig who had a trouser filling moment when he lost a wheel nut half way down. He came past me at an astonishing pace.

Honister was my personal favorite. Only added to by dodging the vintage cars also racing the pass. A couple of steep sections up to 30% gradient. Then a fast but mellower bottom section, back down to the car.

As dusk falls, in the fading light. We move onto Wrynose pass. This is not only steep but also a single track road. There is barely enough room to pass an oncoming car in places.

Hardknott pass : By now we were in total darkness, and relying on the power of torch light. Which might sound a bit crazy considering the tight switchbacks and 30% gradient

The final pass was the Kirkstone pass. I really enjoyed this one, also under darkness. Perhaps this would have been even better during daylight. Finishing off by cruising down into the busy tourist town of Ambleside.

Conclusion

The five passe's challenge makes a great day out. The riding was excellent, but also set against an impressive stage. There should be more of this style of meet, and I urge you to get involved, you won't be disappointed.

It might be more practical to do the challenge during the summer, when the days are longer. Although riding under head torch did have its charms.

Anyway, the gauntlet is down. Arm yourself with this info. Go out and do it. Beat 8 1/2 hours.
